ABC’s LOST explained!
Still wondering what the television show LOST was all about? I have answers!

SPOILER ALERT – the following article will completely explain and therefore give away to the most important puzzle pieces from the hit ABC television series LOST. Therefore if you haven’t seen the show and don’t want the end to be spoiled, stop reading this article right here! As for the rest of you who have wondered… what did it all mean? I have the answer for you!
Now that the spoiler warning is out of the way, lets get right to it…

The most mysterious lingering question remaining regarding the television show LOST is… what is the golden light in the cave at the heart of the island?
If only we knew what the light was maybe we could determine what the island was. And if we knew those facts we could piece together all the remaining details. Some might say the question was already answered when Jacob claimed the island was like a cork (when he said that he wasn’t lying which I will explain later) yet saying the island is a cork really only raises another question instead of giving any type of comprehensive answer, after all… if the island is a cork, what does that mean? I for one am glad that the writers didn’t spell it all out for us because if they had, it would have robbed us the opportunity to ponder the larger questions and solve the puzzle ourselves and ultimately that was the fun of LOST.
SO WHAT WAS THE LIGHT?
The golden light in the cave at the heart of the island is the same light that was behind the frozen donkey wheel that the MIB, Ben, and Locke, all were attempting to manipulate or channel to their benefit throughout the show. It also seems to be the same light (or a type of it) that engulfed the island when Desmond flipped the fail safe, when Juliette ignited Jughead, and each time our losties were bounced around when the island was skipping in time.
Most folks assume the light is God, or spirituality, or possibly the personification of goodness, or life, or something similarly vague. None of those solutions help us piece together the puzzle that is LOST.
Drum roll please…

anyone trying to be sarcastic .. like Justin is just an idiot .. Eric i’ve read and spoken to people who have been directly involved with the series LOST and you’re absolutely right 😀 …. just to confirm one thing .. the smoke monster is indeed the past or rather everyone’s past … if you go back to the episode where Eko faces the smoke monster face to face and ur watching it on blue ray .. you will notice, his mother, the church, the man who first made him kill and the lady who was in his flashback all present in the smoke 😀 …. you should publish this mate 🙂 … makes me wonder if you secretly have worked with carlton and damon on LOST 😀 ….. wish you the very best man !
Very good theory. My head actually stopped hurting after reading this lol. There are still some things I have trouble with though. For example…when exactly did all of them die? The writers have said that the island was a real place and the plane did in fact crash on it and the people were not all dead in the beginning. Another thing that strikes me….when the oil rig exploded and a bunch of them escaped for 3 years Kate had Claires baby (Aaron) with her. This boy was 3 years old or so when they decided to come back to the island. Yet at the end in the final church scene Aaron is a newborn again and Jin and Sun don’t have their little girl with them. Does this mean they never really escaped from the island at all? This would blow away my theory that they all died when Juliette activated the bomb and it started showing the alternate plane landing that lead to them finding out they were dead. Did they all die in the helicopter escaping the ship?
I love the time theory, it makes a lot of sense but unfortunately for me the finale raised more questions than it answered Every time I think I have started to figure something out it makes less and less sense.
Regards for helping out, superb information. dgkkdabcec
Thanks for TRYING 2 explain everything, but you’re waaaaaay off. There are so many holes in this theory, it almost makes me think you didn’t even watch the show or pay attention close enough.
I have watched all 6 seasons of LOST seven times over the years. And I think your explanation really pulls everything together. I was really very satisfied with your explanation and it really made a lot of sense to me. I hope to get a chance to see the whole LOST series again in light of your explanation.
The whole plot is very layered indeed and I believe the reference to backgammon that another commenter made is very significant as well. The whole theme of manipulation is combined into players playing a game.
I have a couple of interesting points about the number 108:
#1
Remember there was a writer’s strike partway through the show. I think the writers had originally planned to have the show finish at the end of the fifth season. And that they hoped to have only 108 shows. I think they wanted to give more significance to the number 108 as a kind of mythical or magic number. Of course, I have no proof of this. But the writers strike was real and they did have to extend to another year to finish the series.

And what about that number, 108? In Buddhism, 108 is a very special number. Here in Japan, at the end of the year, all the Buddhist shrines ring their bells 108 times. In fact, 108 is a significant number in many eastern religions.

At the end of the very last episode after the credits it shows the plane just sitting on the beach with no one around. Do you think they all died in the plane crash which started off with your whole theory?
Out of all the things I’ve read regarding Lost theories….this makes the most sense! Awesome. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
One of the things that Buddhism states is that we must not dwell on the past or future but to live in the Now. In other words, let go of the Past and Future. Just live in the present, both mind and body. Makes me wonder if one of the writers/creators/Producers is a Buddhist.
Another thing that I wonder if anyone ever noticed in regard to Dōgen. Dōgen Zenji was the founder of Sōtō school of Zen Buddhism in Japan. In Buddhism there are many references to the Past, Present and Future and Suffering. When Dōgen first appeared I wondered if it was just a coincidence but now that I think of the light as time, Jacob as the future and MIB as the past it even makes more sense. Another Wow moment.
Why was the Wheel Room cold when Ben went to turn the wheel?
I LOVE the connection between Einstein’s theory of measuring Time/Space and the Minkowski effect! Minkowski was the name of the communication officer on the freighter and he was the driver shuttling Desmond around in the other timeline after the incident. Wow. That is cool.
One thing i want to know is, in the end when they are in the chapel are they all dead?… and what happend to the people on the plain did they make it?
Its definitely not answering all my question, there are too many of them anyway but by far its the best explanation for the series that I have read. Great job. I will read it over and over while watching the series again. I am sure it will all make sense now.
You said Smokie represents the past. Yemi, Kate’s horse, Ben’s mother, etc. But what about Walt? Walt wasn’t dead when Shannon saw him in the jungle.
First off, Thanks Eric for these insights. I am now force to watch the entire series again to apply these thoughts.
I don’t know if the having babies issue was ever answered in the comments but I suggest this. It could be a physical limitation as they move back in time every 108 minute that is too stressful for babies. However, I think it is more a concept of Yin and Yang, black and white, good vs evil. If you can’t have one without the other, and by traveling back in time you are cheating or avoiding death, you are doing the same to birth as well because you never get completely to the future. no death=no birth
Ok, I have a question. On the return flight, why wasn’t Sun Kwon “white lighted” off the plane with the rest before it landed? What am I missing?
Thank you so much! Your kind comments mean a great deal to me.
Your theory, explanations and clarifications are the missing link in order to fully understand the LOST’s series very well hidden meaning and more in particular its ending. Thanks a lot for your very good work which no doubt will lead to watch LOST again.
This theory is pretty spot on i always go back to season five episode 14 i think when we see faraday as a child playing the piano and his mom comes in and tells him he doesn’t have time to juggle the piano and his studys both and he replys “I can make time” and she gives him a cold stare and replys “if only you could son” i just have a couple of unanserable questions of my own like why couldn’t women give birth on the island and why were the numbers bad luck to hugo and was there ever a real fever-type disease on the island
