ABC’s LOST: the ultimate theory and explanation

ABC’s LOST explained!

Still wondering what the television show LOST was all about? I have answers!

Lost-Explained

SPOILER ALERT – the following article will completely explain and therefore give away to the most important puzzle pieces from the hit ABC television series LOST. Therefore if you haven’t seen the show and don’t want the end to be spoiled, stop reading this article right here! As for the rest of you who have wondered… what did it all mean? I have the answer for you!

Now that the spoiler warning is out of the way, lets get right to it…

Are there Twinkies in there mommy?
Are there Twinkies in there mommy?

The most mysterious lingering question remaining regarding the television show LOST is… what is the golden light in the cave at the heart of the island?

If only we knew what the light was maybe we could determine what the island was. And if we knew those facts we could piece together all the remaining details. Some might say the question was already answered when Jacob claimed the island was like a cork (when he said that he wasn’t lying which I will explain later) yet saying the island is a cork really only raises another question instead of giving any type of comprehensive answer, after all… if the island is a cork, what does that mean? I for one am glad that the writers didn’t spell it all out for us because if they had, it would have robbed us the opportunity to ponder the larger questions and solve the puzzle ourselves and ultimately that was the fun of LOST.

SO WHAT WAS THE LIGHT?

The golden light in the cave at the heart of the island is the same light that was behind the frozen donkey wheel that the MIB, Ben, and Locke, all were attempting to manipulate or channel to their benefit throughout the show. It also seems to be the same light (or a type of it) that engulfed the island when Desmond flipped the fail safe, when Juliette ignited Jughead, and each time our losties were bounced around when the island was skipping in time.

Most folks assume the light is God, or spirituality, or possibly the personification of goodness, or life, or something similarly vague. None of those solutions help us piece together the puzzle that is LOST.

Drum roll please…

  1. “Although Faraday received little formal education he was one of the most influential scientists in history.[1] It was by his research on the magnetic field around a conductor carrying a direct current that Faraday established the basis for the concept of the electromagnetic field in physics. Faraday also established that magnetism could affect rays of light and that there was an underlying relationship between the two phenomena.[2][3] He similarly discovered the principle of electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism, and the laws of electrolysis. … As a respected scientist in a nation with strong maritime interests, Faraday spent extensive amounts of time on projects such as the construction and operation of light houses…”
From Wikipedia article on Michael Faraday.

  2. I believe the island is located at the exact opposite coordinates to the coast of Tunisia (where the islanders end up after turning the wheel). It would off the north east coast of new Zealand. New Zealand is actually the tip of a submerged continent. (This not touchy-feely-new-age bull-___. It is a geological fact.)

  3. I just finished the show yesterday and had to go online and find some answer. Now after reading this I have to start over tomorrow and watch it all over again.

  4. to xavier. Women can’t bear children because the statue of the egyptian god of fertility was destroyed by the black rock. People heal because the levels of electromagnetism would increase the efficiency of the cells amino acid and promote rapid cellular regeneration.

  5. I just finished watching Lost and throughout the entire thing I have been lookin up theories and googling tons of stuff hoping to find answers. The writers left way to many unanswered questions to a point that the ending of lost was most unenjoyable. But I have to say this explanation is actually amazing and makes the entire how make so much more sense. You are actually super awesome at coming up with these theories.

  6. I am preparing for my third re-watch, having loved the first watch when first aired, with a group of fans. Your explanation ie best I have ever read. You take nothing from the theme of remembering, letting go, and moving on nor extract the emotional connections to the characters, . You do give us a foundation, a center, TIME, to understand the rest. I had never looked at the light as time before. By doing that, everything is clear. I saw it as a spiritual source, a power source, but not as TIME itself. Yet, now, what else could it be? I knew the smoke monster saw the fears and vulnerabilities in our characters and used them, but to call it the past makes so much sense. I will be watching this time with your theories in mind. Thank you so much.

  7. Hey man have just finished watching lost and loved it but this explanation you have come up with is amazing. Very well thought out and makes perfect sence. With respect to the above comment i think that the this was explained in this blog. The smoke existed but had no purpose as it was simply the past. When it was given a body to bond with and a motive to escape the island it escaped the cave and began its mission.
Anyway thanks for the great read man.

  8. I really like youre thesis, I’m just not entirely sure how it explains why people are cured and why women cannot have children on the island.

  9. Mind blown. This seems to be the most acceptable explanation out there. One thing like the other guy said the Egyptian’s came after and I dont think the smoke monster existed until the death of the MIB. I cant substantiate my claims as you have but im pretty sure jacob looked like he never seen anything smiliar in his life when he first saw the monster. And that egyptian was the god Anubis right? He didn’t look scared of the monster… what if the smoke monster taught them much like the mib looked after his people and how the smoke monster seemed to help the others

  10. Great man… one of the best out there..
but only one question? why has the island healing powers and cures lockes legs and cancer etc. ?

  11. I have just finished watching the series for a second time. So many questions and thoughts…. This explanation sums up everything in my opinion! It makes sense if Jacob & the MIB. It makes sense in terms of the women not able to give birth… If you’re constantly setting back time, how can a new life come about? It also makes the side story/pergarory make sense also, people fighting wrongs or still living in the past they couldn’t let go of. Thank you for this, I feel as though I can let go now that I have an explanation I agree with!

  12. Very well thought out. I quite enjoyed lost. I always believed it was focusing on time, but I always wanted to add the bad vs good. This helped me. Thanks!

  13. This was a very conclusive explanation. I watched the whole thing on Netflx back to back and could not imagine having to wait a week for the next episode. I found the show gripping and compelling but for me, i need an explanation, a “who done it” moment if you will. After all the whole thing was shrowded in mystery making it just as much a mystery and suspense thriller as it was a sci-fi series and the joy of mysteries for me is that they are eventually explained and that after all is why you would bother watching in the first place with hopes that there’s going to be this really big pay off or explanation at the end. All this talk about the past and moving on, were they trying to manipulate their audience the way charactes in the show were by almost literally leaving us with a big cliff hanger at the end? Was this whole thing just some twisted experiment. How can anyone move on without resolution which in my opinion is the only thing the show failed to do. Thoroughly enjoyed watching the whole thing and it was fun and thought provoking and all but in the end their were just too many loose ends and things left unresolved. So thank you Eric for laying it all out with this thorough and great explanation. JJ Abrams owes you some money.

  14. this is an awesome explanation. really does line just about everything up. what do you make of Walt’s ‘powers’ and the themes of how everyone is connected? connectivity was the word used.

  15. For me this theory is very convincing, I have another evidence for this quoting imdb trivia:
“In original drafts for the show, Rousseau’s team of scientists were studying time. The network decided not to include it in the show, in case the viewers would think it too science fiction and stop watching.”
